Google Nest Hubs are useful little weather stations. You can easily see the current temperature and check the forecast. They can also show you information about the quality of the air (AQI) . In some places, it is important to know.

By the end of 2021, Google introduced some air quality features for Google Assistant smart displays. The AQI is displayed with the weather on the ambient display, plus you can ask about current conditions and receive alerts when it reaches unhealthy levels.

What is AQI?

“AQI” stands for “Air Quality Index”. It is simply a unit of measure for air quality. The higher the number, the worse the air quality. When there is a lot of smoke, pollen, or air pollution, the AQI number is high.

There are several services that record air quality and publish AQI numbers. Google is using AirNow , which is administered by the EPA . The index is specific to the United States, which, as of this writing in September 2021, is where this Nest Hub feature is available.

Colour Air quality index (AQI) Level of health concern
Green 0 to 50 Well
Yellow 51 to 100 Moderate
Orange 101 to 150 Unhealthy for sensitive groups
Red 151 to 200 Unhealthy
Purple 201 to 300 Very unhealthy
Garnet 301 to 500 Dangerous

The Air Quality Index ranges from 0 to 500 with six different color-coded severity levels. 0-100 is the range you want to be in, anything that starts to get unhealthy. The goal of the AQI is to provide an easy way to view air quality at any time.

Of course, you don’t need a Nest Hub to check the AQI. You can also easily check it on your iPhone, iPad or device Android .

How to check the local air quality index on Nest Hub

AQI features on Nest Hub are not available everywhere. If the AQI does not appear automatically on the screen, you can check the settings to enable it manually. However, you may still not see anything if your area is not supported.

If that doesn’t put the AQI on the ambient display, you’re not out of luck. You can still ask the Google Assistant “What’s the air quality near me?” to view similar information upon request, but will not always be present on the screen.

Air quality information

That’s all about it! The AQI is not something everyone thinks about, but if you live in an area with frequent wildfires or bad pollution, it is part of your life. Nest Hub’s smart display features make it a bit easier to control.
