Apple

The silicon chips ARM-based from Apple They’re powerful and efficient, but what if you need an extra grunt and don’t mind sacrificing battery life or power consumption? Apple has a solution for that called High Power Mode.

What chips support high power mode?

At the time of writing this article in October 2021, only the M1 Max chip in the 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro Supports high power mode. Even if you configure a 14-inch model with the more powerful M1 Max chip, you won’t be able to take advantage of the high-power mode at this time.

Apple’s justification for this is likely due to heat production . Since the high-power mode allows the M1 Max to run at a higher load for longer, reviewers have noted that the chassis is noticeably warmer than when the mode is not activated.

The larger 16-inch body should allow for more airflow and provide more bare metal to act as a heat sink, dissipating heat better.

High power mode is reserved for demanding processes

It’s not necessarily possible to ‘force’ high power mode on macOS, but there is a switch in the System Preferences that will give your Mac free rein to do its best when necessary.

While plugged into the wall, you will find the option under Battery> Power adapter> Power mode, or if you are using battery, you will find it under Battery> Battery> Power mode. Move the lever to “High Power” to let the high power mode do its thing.

The reality is, unless you’re doing serious video processing or 3D rendering, you probably won’t find situations where high power mode is required. Unless you can think of a workflow you use that can trigger a burst of fan noise, you probably shouldn’t base your purchase decision on high power mode.
