How to use the ambient sound tool in iOS 15

Background noise is usually not a good signal and could indicate an error in the operating system. But in iOS 15, there is a new background noise feature that is a real bonus.

iOS 15 is about to launch (iOS 15 features) and we are excited about a specific feature that we have discovered. While testing the beta version of iOS15, something we’ve been doing for a while, we came across a fantastic feature that might also seem like a bug at first glance.

Basically, the feature is a health-related function called “background noise”. Yes, you heard that right: Even though Apple has tried to filter out that background noise with the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max using active noise cancellation, iOS 15 comes with a feature that deliberately generates background noise.

What noises are included?

A total of six different noises are intended to help the user minimize distractions, focus, and relax. They include the following sounds:

  • Balanced sound
  • Brilliant sound
  • Dark sound
  • Ocean
  • Rain
  • River

How to turn on background noise

You can activate this feature in two different ways:

  1. In iOS 15, open Settings
  2. Select accessibility
  3. Scroll down and select Audio / Visual
  4. Tap Background noise
  5. Turn on background noise

In this menu you can also set the volume of the noises that should be reproduced and if they should also be reproduced in the locked state. Additionally, you can use two sliders to set the volume of background noise, for example when listening to music, a podcast, or an audiobook at the same time.

There is another way to activate the background noise function. You can tap the ear icon through the Control Center to quickly activate background noise.

  1. Access ‘Control Center’ by swiping down from the top right of the screen on newer iPhones without a home button, and on older iPhones with a home button, swiping up from the bottom from the screen.
  2. Tap the ear icon.
  3. If the ear icon is not in the control center, do the following: Open Settings> Select Control Center> Scroll to the bottom and add the ‘listen’ icon.
