How to update the operating system to iOS 15 on iPhone

This June, Apple once again took advantage of the Worldwide Developers Conference to announce the arrival of a new update to the iPhone operating system: iOS 15.

It won’t be officially available until next fall. It will be then when you no longer have to settle for old versions and you will be able to take advantage of all its new functions and important corrections in its security system.

In this article, we explain everything you have to take into account before updating your device, as well as, logically, the steps you must follow to install the latest iOS. We also guide you through the process to do if you are using a beta version.

What to do before updating the iOS on your iPhone

Step 1. Create a backup in iCloud or iTunes

The first thing to do before installing a new version of the operating system is to create a backup copy of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. For this, you can use both iCloud and iTunes.

1. Check that you have access to iCloud or iTunes, as well as a computer and an extra device that you can later use to access the backup.

2. If you choose to create a backup using iCloud, you must first activate the option by going to ‘Settings‘and touching your photo at the top. Now, hit ‘iCloud‘. On the new screen, scroll down and tap on ‘ICloud copy‘.

Then activate the switch on the right hand side, taking into account that doing so will stop saving a backup copy on your computer when synchronizing with iTunes. Then you can create the copy as long as you have space in your iCloud.

3. Alternatively, you can use iTunes to create a backup of your device. You will need to connect it to a PC or Mac using a USB cable and have the program installed on your computer.

When you plug your iPhone or iPad into your PC or Mac, iTunes will open automatically. Now tap on the mobile icon below the toolbar to access your device preferences.

Then, choose where you want the backup to be saved -in iCloud or on your computer- and click on the ‘buttonMake a copy now‘.

Step 2. Save a copy of the old version of iOS

Although this second step can be skipped without problem, we recommend keeping it in mind, as it will probably make things easier for you if you regret having installed the latest version of the iOS operating system.

It is about creating a copy of the version you currently have before updating your device, which you can access later. However, keep in mind that sometimes this is not possible. You can download it again from iTunes.

Step 3. Free up space for the download of the new iOS

It is a good idea to free up a few gigs on your iPhone or iPad to make room for the new version of iOS, simply because sometimes your device will need them to be able to update.

In our article on how to free up space on an iPhone you will find all our recommendations, but we suggest above all remove some apps, which you can reinstall once the update has finished.

Step 4. Plug your device into an electrical outlet

There’s nothing worse than running out of battery in the middle of an update. That is why we highly recommend keeping the device to be updated plugged into the power throughout the entire process, especially if it is at 50% or less.

You can use the official cables that Apple sells from its website – you may be interested in this USB Cable West power adapter, or opt for the cheaper versions that you will find in Amazon.

Step 5. Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network

Finally, remember to have your device connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network throughout the update, especially if you don’t have a good 3G or 4G connection. It in addition it will prevent you from running out of mobile data.

How to install iOS 15 on your iPhone

Currently, iOS 15 is only available in beta for developers. In July, the first public beta version will also become available. If you are interested in trying these unofficial versions, see our article How to install iOS 15 beta on your iPhone.

Once the official version arrives in the fall (probably in September), you will be able to follow the steps indicated below on your iPhone. You will see that it is not a complicated process, but it may take a few minutes.

Then, click on the option ‘Software update‘and wait for your device to find the available update.

2. Before proceeding to download and install the latest version of iOS, we recommend taking a look at all the relative information that you will find if you tap on ‘More information‘. Although we use the iOS 11.4 update in capturing images, the process is the same.

3. Once the information is read, tap on ‘Behind‘in the upper left corner to return to the previous screen. Now yes, click on ‘Download and install‘. You will have to enter your password and accept the terms and conditions.

4. During the update download process, you can continue to use your smartphone or tablet, as it will be done in the background.

5. Now, click on ‘Install Now‘for your iPhone or iPad to start installing the latest iOS update. Remember that it may take a while.

6. Finally, check that the new version of the operating system is installed by going back to the ‘Software update’ section of your ‘Settings’. You should see the following message: “The software is up to date.”

How to update iOS if you have a beta version installed

Before the arrival of a new iOS update, developers have the option to install a beta version on their device, which at some point is also available to the general public.

If you dare to install the beta version, you will be interested to know what to do when the official version arrives. You should know that in order to install the full version of the new iOS update, you must first get rid of this beta version.

You can do it by going to the ‘Settings‘from your iPhone or iPad, by selecting’general‘, followed by ‘Profile‘. There, tap on ‘IOS beta software profile‘and click on’Delete profile‘. You must confirm the action by entering your password.
