How to send a Google document by email

Sending a Google document to someone by email is as easy as clicking a few buttons. You can use Gmail or any other email client to do this, and we’ll show you how to do it on desktop computers and mobile devices.

Multiple ways to email a Google Doc

To send an email to a Google doc, you can use an option within Google Docs who uses your Gmail account. Or, if you want to use your own email application, you can download your Google document from the site to your computer and then attach that document to an email in your email application.

You can also send Google documents by email from your mobile devices, as we will explain below. Throughout the guide, we use the term “doc”, which refers to Google Docs documents. But you can follow the same steps to email your Google Sheets and Google Slides.

Email a Google Doc from Gmail on Desktop

On a Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook computer, you can use the Google Docs site to email a document to someone. This sends your document as an attachment through Gmail.

To use this method, open a web browser on your computer and start the site of Google Docs . Then select the document you want to email.

On the document editing screen, locate the menu bar and select File> Email> Email this file.

You will see a “Email this file” window. Here, you can specify options for the email that your Google doc will contain as an attachment. This is what each option means:

Send yourself a copy – Check this box if you want to receive a copy of the email that will be sent to the recipient.

For : Enter the recipient’s email address in this field. This is the person who will receive your document from Google.

Matter – Enter a subject for the email that will contain your Google doc. By default, the name of your document is the subject line, but you can change it.

Message – Write an optional message that you would like to send along with your document.

Do not attach. Include content in email – If you enable this option, Google Docs will embed the content of your document in the email instead of attaching the document as an attachment. This works when your recipient is unable to download attachments for some reason, but is not recommended as this can cause problems with the format of your document.

Pdf – Select the format in which your Google Doc will be emailed. Your options are PDF, RTF, Open Document, HTML, Microsoft Word, and Plain Text.
