How to restore deleted files and folders on Microsoft OneDrive

It could be said that there is nothing worse than delete a file or folder which he did not intend to delete. If this unfortunate event took place in your Microsoft OneDrive account, there are some recovery options at your disposal.

Restore a deleted file from your OneDrive recycle bin

If you deleted a file or folder from your OneDrive account, you can restore it from the Recycle Bin within 30 days. After 30 days, the deleted file or folder is automatically and permanently removed from the Recycle Bin.

You can do this from your desktop or mobile device.

Restore a deleted file or folder via desktop

First, sign in to your OneDrive account from your desktop and then click on “Recycle Bin” on the left panel.

Click Recycle Bin.

Once in the Recycle Bin, right-click on the file or folder you want to restore and then click “Restore” from the context menu.

Right-click the file, and then click Restore.

The selected file or folder will then be restored. If you want to restore all files and folders from the Recycle Bin at once, click the “Restore all items” option at the top of the screen.

Click Restore All Items.

A confirmation window will appear. Click the blue “Restore” button to continue.

Click Restore.

All files and folders will be restored.

Restore a deleted file or folder via mobile device

To restore a deleted OneDrive file or folder with your mobile device, you will need to download the OneDrive app to ios or Android . Once installed, tap the app icon to launch it.

Once you are in the app, tap on “Files” at the bottom of the screen.

Touch Files.

Then tap on “Recycle Bin” at the bottom of the folder list.

In the Recycle Bin, locate the file or folder you want to restore, tap the three dots on the right, and then select “Restore” from the menu that appears at the bottom of the screen.

Touch Restore.

If you want to select multiple files and folders at once, touch and hold the first file and then select the other files you want to restore by touching them. A blue check mark will appear to the left of the selected files.

Next, tap on the Restore icon located in the upper right corner of the screen.

Your files and folders will be restored.

Restore a deleted file from your PC’s recycle bin

If you deleted a file or folder from OneDrive and it synced with your computer, you can also restore that file or folder from the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac). Note that this will not work if you deleted a file only online in OneDrive.

First, open the Recycle Bin or Trash on your computer. Once there, locate the file or folder that you want to restore and then right-click on it. Or, if you want to restore all files and folders, press Ctrl + A (Windows) or Command + A (Mac) and then right-click any file or folder. Then click “Restore” in the context menu that appears.

Click Restore.

The selected file or folder will then be restored.

Restore your OneDrive account to a previous version (Microsoft 365 only)

If is one Microsoft 365 subscriber , there is an additional recovery option available to you: a full OneDrive recovery. This is not only good for recovering deleted files, but you can also take advantage of this if one of your files gets damaged or becomes infected with malware.

To restore your OneDrive account to a previous version, sign in to your OneDrive account and then click on the “Gear” icon in the upper right corner of the window.

The Settings menu will appear. Click “Options” in the OneDrive Settings group.

Click Options.

On the next screen, you will see a new list of options on the left panel. Here, click on the “Restore your OneDrive” option near the bottom of the list.

Click Restore your OneDrive.

You will now need to verify your identity, so go ahead and click the blue “Verify Your Identity” button.

A unique seven-digit code will be sent to your email address. Enter the code in the text box and then click the blue “Verify” button.

Enter the code and click Verify.

Once verified, you will be on the “Restore your OneDrive” screen. Click the box below “Select a date” and then choose the time you would like to restore your OneDrive from the drop-down menu. You can choose between yesterday, a week ago, three weeks ago, or set a custom date and time.

Once you have selected a date, click “Restore”.

Click the blue Restore button.

Now you will need to confirm that you want to restore your OneDrive to the selected date and then once again click on the blue ‘Restore’ button.

Click Restore in the pop-up window.

Then the restoration process will begin. In no time, all your files and folders will be restored to the selected date and time.

There are many ways to back up your files and folders, from cloud providers until External hard drives on another computer . Keeping a backup of your files and folders in multiple locations is the best way to protect your data.
