Sony’s PS Remote Play service is nothing new. Ever since the PS4 was introduced, Sony has offered a way for gamers to remotely access their consoles and play their favorite games from the screen of other devices.
Unlike other similar services such as the one offered by Microsoft for Xbox One, it is possible to play your favorite PS4 or PS5 games from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a decent enough Internet connection.
Although initially, when the service was launched, its use was limited to the PS Vita and PS TV devices, Sony has evolved it so that PS Remote Play is also available for users of Mac, Android and more recently iOS.
Next, we’re going to show you how to play PS4 and PS5 games on an iPhone or iPad, along with some tips to improve the streaming and viewing experience.
How to set up PS Remote Play on iOS
The good news is that configuring PS Remote Play on your iPhone or iPad has become a relatively simple process. All you need is your iOS device and access to your PS4 or PS5 console.
- Download and install the PS Remote Play app on your iPhone or iPad.
- On your PS4 / PS5 console, go to ‘Settings> Remote Play Connection Settings’ and make sure the ‘Enable Remote Play’ option is checked.
- Open the PS Remote Play app and log in with your PlayStation Network account.
- The application will search for your console through the Internet; this is a bit hit and miss. If you find it, you should be able to connect to the PS4 and play. Otherwise…
- If the application cannot locate your console, go to ‘Settings> Remote use connection settings on your PS4’ and select ‘Add device’. It should show you a code on the screen.
- Tap ‘Register manually’ in the PS Remote Play app and enter the code displayed on your console.
- The app should be able to locate your PS4 / PS5 and start streaming.
Improving the viewing experience
Now you can play the games from your iPhone or iPad. However, we are going to explain some concepts with which you can improve the general experience of streaming games.
Adjust streaming settings
The first thing you should do after configuring the connection in the application Remote play is to adjust the transmission within the ‘Settings’ section. To do this, click on the gear in the upper right corner of the application (before you start streaming) and click on ‘Video quality’ for remote playback.
The default value is standard (540p) and, although it may be acceptable on an iPhone, you will certainly find that the quality can be improved if you use an iPad screen. If you want a clearer streaming experience, turn it up to 720p or even 1080p if you have a PS4 Pro or PS5.
Another aspect that you should take into account is the Internet connection, which if it is relatively slow at 540p, you will need a better connection both at home and in the place where you are connected to achieve a latency-free experience at 720p or 1080p.
Besides adjusting the resolution, you can also adjust the frame rate from the settings menu. You can select a higher frame rate for a smoother gaming experience, but like resolution, the higher the more bandwidth you’ll need.
Use an MFI driver
Although you can use Sony’s official DualShock controller when using PS Remote Play on a PC or Mac, the same cannot be said for iOS. To avoid this, Sony has created touch screen controls to emulate the PS4 or PS5 DualShock.
As seasoned iOS gamers will know, control schemes based on traditional controller layout don’t translate well to touch, and that’s the case here. In fact, the whole experience improves when using an MFI driver like SteelSeries Nimbus +.
It allows you to interact with your games in almost the same way as with a DualShock controller. Take a look at the article on best accessories for PS5, with which the gaming experience is improved, whether they are controllers, headphones, charging bases and much more.
You should know that not all MFI controllers were designed with this in mind and therefore do not offer the variety of buttons necessary to successfully map a DualShock controller.
For example, you may not be able to access the ‘Share or options’ menu, or trigger any action that requires a touch panel or L3 / R3 input. So while an MFI controller enhances the experience, it is not entirely perfect.
