How to make a pie chart in Microsoft Excel

Using pie charts allows you to illustrate the distribution of data in the form of sectors. It’s easy to create 2D, 3D or donut pie charts in Microsoft Excel – no design skills required! Here’s how to do it.

How to create a pie chart in Excel

To create a pie chart in Excel, first open your spreadsheet with the Excel application. We will use the following spreadsheet for this guide:

In your spreadsheet, select the data that you want to plot on your pie chart. Do not select the sum of no number, since you probably don’t want it to show up on your chart.

Select the data for the pie chart.

While your data is selected, in the Excel ribbon at the top, click on the “Insert” tab.

On the “Insert” tab, in the “Charts” section, select the “Insert pie or donut chart” option (it is in the form of a small pie chart).

To see what a pie chart will look like for your data, hover over the chart and a preview will appear.

Once you decide on a chart, click on that chart to add it to your spreadsheet.

The chart is now available in your spreadsheet. To change the chart header, double-click the header and enter a new name.

You can change the position of the chart on your spreadsheet by dragging and dropping the chart. There is also an option to lock your chart position .

How to customize pie chart in Excel

The default pie chart layout looks good on its own, but you can customize it if you want.

To do so, click on your chart to select it. Then, in the Excel ribbon at the top, click on the “Chart Design” tab.

On the “Graphics Design” tab, you will find various graphics customization options. If you want to change the color scheme of your chart, click on the “Change Colors” option and choose a new scheme.

Similarly, to change the style of your chart, choose a new layout from the “Chart Styles” section.

Finally, if you want to use your chart outside of Excel, save the chart as an image file by right-clicking on the chart and selecting “Save as image.”
