Working with Mac OS

How to find out how much disk space you have on your Mac

We can think of countless cases for which you may need to know the free storage space you have on your Mac computer at any given time. Well, if you still don’t know how to find out, you’ve come to the right place.

Checking the available space on a Mac is an easy task, but new Mac users or those who come from Windows may find themselves a bit lost when it comes to these relatively simple queries or tasks. We are going to show you how to find out.

After the launch of the latest versions of the macOS operating system, if Mac computers have something, it is that they allow you to know not only how much space you have occupied, but also how much is free, as well as classify it by different categories to interpret it.

How to see how much storage my Mac has

The easiest way to find out how much storage space your Mac has is as follows:

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the menu bar.
  2. Click on ‘About this Mac’.
  3. Click on the ‘Storage’ tab.
  4. Next, you will see the details of your storage disk.

Below the information you will see a bar graph (it may take a few moments to appear) where the content categories are shown and how much space each one occupies.

Much of your storage is likely taken up by a category called ‘Other’. Also that of ‘System’ tends to be a devourer of space. Check our ranking on the best programs to clean macOS.

How to view storage in the ‘Finder’

Another way to see at a quick glance how much space is available on your Mac is to open the ‘Finder’.

The first thing to do is make sure your Mac’s hard drive appears; it won’t by default:

  1. Click on ‘Finder’ from the menu itself.
  2. Now choose ‘Preferences’.
  3. Click on the sidebar.
  4. Under ‘Locations’, check the box next to your Mac’s name.
  5. Now, in the ‘Locations’ section of the ‘Finder’ sidebar, you should see your Mac.
  6. Right click on this icon and select ‘Get information’.
  7. Now, in the ‘Finder’ window, right-click on the icon for your Mac.
  8. Choose ‘Get information’.
  9. You will then see how much space you have, how much is being used, and how much storage is available.

Another quick way to see how much space you have available is to add your ‘Home’ folder to the ‘Favorites’ section of the Finder sidebar.

  1. Click on the ‘Finder’ menu.
  2. Now choose ‘Preferences’.
  3. Click on the sidebar.
  4. In the ‘Favorites’ section, make sure the ‘Home’ folder, which will likely have your name and a house icon, is checked.
  5. Now, when you choose that ‘Home’ folder in the sidebar at the bottom of the window, you will see how much space is left free.
