How to enable dark mode in Microsoft Outlook

Tired of seeing the same glossy Outlook interface on your devices? If so, activate the dark mode and get a dark email experience on your favorite email client. We’ll show you how to do it in Outlook on desktops, mobile devices, and the web.

Note: To use Outlook dark mode on the desktop, you must be subscribed to Microsoft Office 365 . If you have another version of Office, you can use a dark gray theme, which is the closest you can get to dark mode.

Turn on dark mode in Outlook on Windows and Mac

The way you enable dark mode in the desktop version of Outlook differs between Windows and Mac. Follow the section for your operating system below.

Enable dark mode in Windows

If you’re on a Windows PC, use an option within the Outlook app to turn on dark mode. Note that that option enable dark mode in all your Office applications , including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

To get started, first, open Outlook on your PC. Click on “File” in the upper left corner of the application.

In the sidebar on the left, select “Office Account”.

In the right pane, click on the “Office Theme” drop-down menu and select “Black.” This enables dark mode in the Outlook application.

The entire Outlook interface will go dark, as you can see below.

To disable dark mode, click on the “Office Theme” drop-down menu and choose an option other than “Black.”

And everything is ready.

Enable dark mode on Mac

On a Mac, you cannot enable dark mode from Outlook. You will have to turn on your Mac’s native dark mode, which will cause Outlook to use the mode. Note that this mode applies to all other applications on your Mac and not just Outlook.

Turn on dark mode in Outlook on mobile devices

The Outlook app for iPhone, iPad, and Android also offers dark mode. To enable it, first, open the Outlook application on your phone.

In the upper left corner of the app, tap on your profile icon.

In the menu that opens from the left of the screen, tap “Settings” (a gear icon).

On the ‘Settings’ page, in the ‘Preferences’ section, tap ‘Appearance’.

The “Appearance” page offers three themes to choose from. Here’s how each theme works:

  • Light – This option uses light mode in Outlook.
  • Dark – Select this option to enable dark mode in Outlook.
  • System : This option uses the default mode of your phone. It means that if you have enabled dark mode on your phone , Outlook will also use dark mode.

Turn on dark mode in Outlook on the web

If you use Outlook on the web at Outlook.com, it can also make your web email experience dark.

To do so, open your preferred web browser on your device and start the site of Outlook . On the site, log in to your email account.

In the upper right corner of the site, click on “Settings” (a gear icon).

In the “Settings” menu, enable the “Dark Mode” option.

Tip: To deactivate dark mode, deactivate the “Dark mode” option.
