If you want to be able to use Microsoft Office for free on your iPad, you should know that if the device is less than 10.1 inches, you can install Microsoft Office for free.
However, there are alternatives thanks to which you can use the Office apps for free on your iPad Pro. In this article we will tell you about the different options available to be able to use Microsoft Office (or similar programs) for free on your iPad.
If in addition to downloading Microsoft Office, you would like to take a look at different accessories for iPad, do not hesitate to consult our buying guides with the best covers and keyboards for iPad.
Is it worth paying for a Microsoft 365 subscription?
If you have an iPad Pro with a 10.5 or 12.9-inch screen, you must have a Microsoft 365 plan capable of editing files on your iPad Pro, as explained above.
This is because Microsoft assumes that if you are using a device with a screen larger than 10.1 inches, you are using it for professional purposes.
Microsoft requires you to have a subscription to your Microsoft 365 package if you use their applications to work. Or what is the same: if you use Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook for commercial purposes, you must subscribe.
Previously you had to buy the program or software, whereas now it is sufficient to have a subscription. This has its advantages since in case you stop using the program, or in case you find a better alternative, you can cancel your subscription.
Also, keep in mind that Office packages used to cost much more than the price of a current subscription: the standard edition of Office 2008 for Mac cost, for example, around € 350.
When that cost is compared to the annual subscription, this new formula may seem even cheap after all. Especially if you consider that it can be finished at any time. Later we will explain how to cancel a subscription to Microsoft 365.
With the Microsoft 365 subscription you will unlock all the functionality of the iOS Office applications, which means that you will get more features than those who have free access because they are using a smaller iPhone or iPad.
This also means that you will have premium tools in the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook applications: advanced change tracking, the elimination of limits in the ways you can use paragraph styles, and advanced tools for formatting graphics, tables and pictures.
Plus you get 1 TB of storage on-line per person with OneDrive (without an Office 365 subscription you only get 5GB). You may be interested in reading our article on the 12 best services to save your files in the cloud.
How to Download Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to iPad Pro for Free
But what if you are not planning to use the applications for commercial purposes? Maybe you just need Word to write letters and Excel to manage household budgets. Or you may also be just a student (in this case you can get a free subscription).
If you are a student or work in education you can get a free subscription to Office 365. All you need is a valid email address for your school.

If you are in college, you can get the Office 365 University suite by clicking on this link.
If, on the other hand, you only want to access the iOS versions of the Office applications for home use, there are a couple of ways to do so.
One option is to sign up for a free trial. If you only want temporary access, this may be appropriate. You can subscribe to the version of One-month free trial of Microsoft 365 by clicking this link.
If you need to use the Office applications for more than a month, you can choose to get a personal Office 365 subscription and cancel it when you no longer need it. That will cost € 7 a month or € 69 a year (you can share it with up to 6 people).
How to cancel your subscription with Microsoft 365
It is possible to cancel an Office 365 subscription. Here’s how:
- Enter your access data on this web page.
- Go to ‘Services and subscriptions’.
- Find your subscription details.
- Click on ‘Manage’.
- Now select ‘Cancel’ among the various options.
- Finally, click on ‘Confirm cancellation’.
If you cancel within 30 days of your last payment, you will be entitled to a refund. If you pay monthly, you can choose to continue using the apps for the remainder of the month you paid for, or you can claim a refund and lose the ability to edit the apps.
Similarly, if you had paid a year in advance and requested a refund, the application would lose all its functionality.
Alternatives to Office for iOS
Office apps aren’t a must-have on iOS as Apple gives away its own versions of the Office apps for Macs, iPads, and iPhones for free.
Apple’s Office suite includes ‘Pages’ (word processor), ‘Numbers’ (spreadsheets) and ‘Keynote’ (presentations). You can download the latest versions here: Pages, Keynote, Numbers.
You will be able to open Word, Excel and PowerPoint files using the equivalent application on the iPad, iPhone or Mac and also save them as a version of Office if you need to send them to someone who does not use Apple applications.
Even if you are familiar with Office applications, the Apple versions offer very similar functionality and are compatible with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. So really, there is no real need to install Office on the iPad anyway.
