You probably use many applications, but sometimes one instance of an application is not enough. If you have an Android phone, you can “clone” or duplicate applications. There are a few reasons why you may want to do this.
Why “clone” an application?
The most common reason for cloning or duplicating Android apps is the use of multiple accounts. These days, more apps support the Login with multiple accounts , but there are still many reservations. Snapchat and WhatsApp are two popular examples.
When you clone an application, you are creating an identical copy that can be used independently. That means you can log in with one account in one version and a different account in another. Even if the app supports multiple accounts, you may find it easier to switch between them this way.
You can also clone an app to create a separate version for a kid or anyone else using your Android device. The cloning app we’ll be using also allows you to rename the app if that’s something you’re interested in doing.
How to duplicate Android apps
We will use an Android application called “App Cloner” to achieve this. The application is not available in the Google Play store, but it can be easily downloaded from developer website and transferred in parallel on your device.
Once installed, open App Cloner and select the application that you would like to duplicate.
There are several things you can do to differentiate the cloned app from the original. First, give the app a different name.
You can then modify the appearance of the icon, either by changing the color or by rotating it. App Cloner has many other options that you should explore, but for the purposes of this guide, we will stop here.
Once you’ve made your customizations, tap on the clone icon at the top.
Depending on the application you are cloning, you may see a message about functionality issues. Not all apps will work properly after being cloned. Tap ‘Continue’.
While the application is cloning, you may also see more warnings. Let the cloning process finish.
After the cloning is complete, you can select “Install application”. You will also need to give App Cloner permission to download apps first.
The Android APK installer will appear with the new name of the application and the icon you created. Touch “Install” to finish.
Now you can open the newly cloned app and (hopefully) use it normally. Again, keep in mind that this will not work with all applications.
That is all! You may not have many uses for this functionality, but for those few cases, it is an extremely handy tool to have at your disposal. Sometimes just having two versions of the same application open your productivity .
