Cooler control on Macbook Pro: Problem and Solution

Cooler control on Macbook Pro

Today we will take a look at an actual problem related to the operating temperature of your MacBook.

The high operating temperature of the MacBook Pro is an actual problem for most active users of Apple technology.

The main reasons for system overheating are:

  • Defect in the production of motherboards in 2012, causing an increased load on the video chip. (For the same reason, the processor temperature in the MacBook remains quite high.)
  • Incorrect settings of the OS X operating system (or prolonged use of Windows on your MacBook)

The narrow air vents, influenced by the MacBook Pro Unibody line’s overall design and the ideology of quiet, comfortable operation, also play a role, which can be a serious obstacle to cooling the powerful hardware of the fast yet quiet MacBook Pro.

If your MacBook gets very hot and the fans don’t seem to spin fast enough, you should first install the latest system updates. In OS X 10.8.3 (and later), Apple took care of the problem by including protocols in the SMC firmware responsible for the cooling system’s operation.

Increasing the amount of RAM will also help lower the overall system temperature by reducing the number of hard disk accesses. Replacing the HDD with an SSD, on the contrary, in some cases, can lead to the operation of coolers at increased speeds and, as a result, an increase in the noise level.

OS X doesn’t come with cooling monitoring software, but there are three temperature sensors in the chassis to help you control the fan on your MacBook Pro. If necessary, the motherboard’s corresponding circuits can increase or decrease the voltage supplied to the fans.

If manual configuration is required, you can use the free cooler control program smcFanControl. It allows you to adjust the minimum RPM, create custom cooling profiles, and display fan speed information in the menu bar.

After installation, the program will appear in the menu bar. To see the main window, select “Preferences …”

After selecting the speed, you can simplify the program control by switching between profiles. The main window is called “Favorite,” and in quick access from the menu – “Active Setting.”

To create a preset, click on the plus in the program window’s upper right corner, specify its name, and set the speed. To set the exact value, press “Tab.”

It is important to know:

The ideal temperature of the central processor is 50-60 C °

The maximum allowable temperature of the central processor is 90 ° C

Minimum fan speed – 2000 RPM

Maximum fan speed – 6200 RPM
